Author: Rzepinska, Maria
Title: The Divine Wisdom of Michelangelo in The creation of Adam.
In: Artibus et historiae 1994, v. 15, no. 29, p. 181-187, ISSN 0391-9064.
Summary: Disputing earlier interpretations of the female figure within God’s left arm in the Creation of Adam (Rome, Vatican, Sistine Chapel) in Neo- platonic terms as Eve (Tolnay) or in cabalistic terms as Shekkina (Schuyler), argues that the figure represents Sophia or Divine Wisdom, and that Michelangelo’s source was the Bible, specifically Proverbs 8:22-31.

Maria Rzepinska in her article cited above states that “Michelangelo was deeply religious and familiar with the Scriptures ----it is most unlikely that Michelangelo would have drawn his inspiration for the creation scenes from any source other than the Bible---”. She goes on to quote Proverbs VIII: 22-31 as the source document for Michelangelo’s inclusion of Divine Wisdom in the Creation of Adam painting.

Author: Hall, Marcia
Title: “Who’s who in Michelangelo’s Creation of Adam” continued
In: Art Bulletin 1993, v. 75, no. 2, June, p. 340-344, ISSN 0004-3079.
Summary: Hall cites Augustine (City of God, 11, 4) and Proverbs 8: 27 in support of her argument that the female figure within the arm of God in the Creation of Adam (Rome, Vatican, Sistine Chapel) represents Divine Wisdom or Sapienta, and not Eve, as proposed by Leo Steinberg (Art Bulletin, 1992, 74 no 4 (Dec) p. 552-566). Steinberg defends his thesis, arguing that Michelangelo’s textural sources were Genesis 1 & 2, which he was concerned to reconcile.

There are clearly articulated Biblical passages describing Divine Wisdom ( or Sophia ) with the Father at Creation (Proverbs VIII: 22-31, Proverbs III: 19, Wisdom IX: 9.) I am not aware of any Biblical passages that describe Eve as pre existing Adam in some preview format.

Evan Randolph’s comments:
It is my belief that in his famous painting The Creation of Adam ( Sistine Chapel, Vatican, Rome ), Michelangelo painted the beautiful Divine Wisdom ( or Sophia ) within God’s left arm. The reader may wish to check out the SistineChapel web site and see for yourself the panels: The Creation of Adam, The Creation of Eve, and Original Sin. I observe that:

The beautiful, blond, slender young lady with the Father in The Creation of Adam bears little physical resemblance to the fuller figured Eve shown in The Creation of Eve, or of the fuller figured Eve in Original Sin. Therefore, Eve and the female with the Father (in The Creation of Adam) are two entirely different women.
Additionally, the emotional attachment these two women have with the Father differs dramatically. In The Creation of Adam, the female with the Father physically touches and is touched by the Father. God’s arm protectively encircles her shoulders and draws her forward, including her in his action, while her hand rests tenderly over his left forearm . A worshipping angel clings to her leg. This scene is entirely consistent with Septuagint, Prov. VIII: 30: “I ( Sophia ) was that wherein he took delight; and daily I rejoiced in his presence continually.”
In contrast, The Creation of Eve shows a subservient Eve painfully pleading with a stern authoritarian Father. As opposed to the Creation of Adam scene, none of the physical touching or emotional closeness exists.
Both physical and emotional contrasts suggest that the female figure under God’s arm in The Creation of Adam and the representations of Eve show two different women with whom the Father has an entirely different relationhip.

It is my observation that all the many female faces painted by Michelangelo on the Sistine Chapel ceiling differ from his painting of Divine Wisdom with the Father except for one other.
The painting of the female with Joseph in the Ancestors of Christ series is virtually the same face. Is it possible that Michelangelo wished to make the statement that Divine Wisdom / Holy Spirit was the Divine Mother of Jesus? If so, this ties into my later findings on this website. Do you agree that this is the same face?

The Divine Feminine ( identified as Divine Wisdom, or Sophia, or the Holy Spirit ) was present during the Creation of the world by the Father.

Here are supporting Biblical passages and comments---The Old Testament quotes are from the Septuagint (Greek and English- Sir Lancelot C.L. Brenton-Regency Reference Library - this Greek Old Testament version was written circa 285 B.C.)------

We observe that both the Holy Spirit and Divine Wisdom ( or Sophia ) were present with God the Father at the creation of the earth:

“In the beginning God made the heaven and
earth. But the earth was unsightly
and unfurnished, and the darkness was over the
deep, and the Spirit of God moved over the
water.”
Septuagint, Genesis I: 1,2 )

“When he ( God ) prepared
the heaven, I ( Wisdom ) was present with him; and
when he prepared his throne upon the
winds: and when he strengthened the
clouds above;and when he secured the
fountains of the earth: and when he
strengthened the foundations of the earth:
I was by him, suiting myself to him, I
was that wherein he took delight; and
daily I rejoiced in his presence continually.”

Divine Wisdom and the Holy Spirit have been identified as being one and the same .

St. Irenaeus, Bishop of Lyons, one of the early church fathers, in his great work Against Heresies1 circa A.D.182, wrote “..And that Wisdom also, which is the Spirit, was present with Him , anterior to all creation, He declares by Solomon: “ God by Wisdom founded the earth, and by understanding hath He established the heaven.By His knowledge the depths burst forth, and the clouds dropped down the dew."

( this is a quote from Proverbs III: 19,20 with only minor variations from The Septuagint: Greek and English- Sir Lancelot C.L. Brenton-Regency Reference Library - this Greek OT version written circa 285 B.C.)

These Biblical passages link together Spirit and Wisdom:

“And thy counsel who hath known,
except thou give wisdom, and send
thy Holy Spirit from above? For so the
ways of them which lived on the earth
were reformed, and men were taught
the things that are pleasing unto thee,
and were saved through wisdom.”
( Septuagint , Wisdom IX : 17-18 )

“For into a malicious soul wisdom shall not
enter: nor dwell in the body that is subject unto
sin. For the holy spirit of discipline will flee
deceit, and remove from thoughts that are without
understanding, and will not abide when unright-
eousness cometh in.
For wisdom is a loving spirit; and will not
acquit a blasphemer of his words: for God is
witness of his reins, and a true beholder of his
heart, and a hearer of his tongue. For the
Spirit of the Lord filleth the world: and that
which containeth all things hath knowledge of the
voice.”
( Septuagint Wisdom I: 4-7 )

“For wisdom, which is the worker of all things,
taught me: for in her is an understanding spirit,
holy, only one, manifold----”
( Septuagint Wisdom VII: 22 )

“I speak God’s hidden wisdom, his secret pur-
pose framed from the very beginning to bring us
to our full glory.----But in the words of scripture,
‘Things beyond our seeing, things beyond our
hearing, things beyond our imagining, all
prepared by God for those who love him’, these
it is that God has revealed to us through the Spirit.
( NEB, 1 Corinthians 2: 7-10 )

“Then a shoot shall grow from the
stock of Jesse,
and a branch shall spring from his
roots.
The Spirit of the Lord shall rest
upon him,
a spirit of wisdom and
understanding,
a spirit of counsel and power,
a spirit of knowledge and the fear
of the Lord.”
( NEB, Isaiah XI: 1-2 )

Note the connection between Isaiah XI: 1-2 to the following passage from Proverbs:

“I wisdom have dwelt with counsel and
knowledge, and I have called upon under-
standing. The fear of the Lord hates
unrighteousness, and insolence, and pride,
and the ways of wicked men; and I hate
the perverse ways of bad men. Counsel
and safety are mine: prudence is mine, and
strength is mine. By me kings reign, and
princes decree justice. By me nobles
become great, and monarchs by me rule
over the earth. I love those that love
me; and they that seek me shall find me.

Prov. III: 13-18:
“ Blessed is the man who has found wis-
dom, and the mortal who knows prudence.
For it is better to traffic for her, than for
treasures of gold and silver. And she is
more valuable than precious stones: no
evil thing shall resist her: she is well known
to all that approach her, and no precious
thing is equal to her in value. For
length of existence and years of life are in
her right hand; and in her left hand are

wealth and glory: out of her mouth pro-
ceeds righteousness, and she carries law
and mercy upon her tongue. Her ways
are good ways, and all her paths are peace-
ful.She is the tree of life to all that lay
hold upon her; and she is a secure help to
all that stay themselves on her, as on the

Lord.
God by wisdom founded the earth, and
by prudence he prepared the heavens. By
understanding were the depths broken up,
and the clouds dropped water.”

Prov. VIII: 1,2:
“ Thou shalt proclaim wisdom, that under-
standing may be obedient to thee. For
she is on lofty eminences, and stands in the
midst of the ways.”

Prov. VIII: 12-30
“I wisdom have dwelt with counsel and
knowledge, and I have called upon under-
standing. The fear of the Lord hates
unrighteousness, and insolence, and pride,
and the ways of wicked men; and I hate
the perverse ways of bad men. Counsel

strength is mine. By me kings reign, and
princes decree justice. By me nobles
become great, and monarchs by me rule
over the earth. I love those that love
me; and they that seek me shall find me.
Wealth and glory belong to me; yea,
abundant possessions and righteousness.
It is better to have my fruit than to have
gold and precious stones; and my produce

is better than choice silver. I walk in
ways of righteousness, and am conversant
with the paths of judgment; that I may
divide substance to them that love me, and
may fill their treasures with good things.
If I declare to you the things that daily
happen, I will remember also to recount
the things of old.
The Lord made me the beginning of
his ways for his works. He established
me before time was in the beginning, be-
fore he made the earth: even before he
made the depths; before the fountains of
water came forth: before the mountains
were settled, and before all hills, he begets
me. The Lord made countries and unin-
habited tracts, and the highest inhabited
parts of the world. When he prepared
the heaven, I was present with him; and
when he prepared his throne upon the
winds: and when he strengthened the
clouds above; and when he secured the
fountains of the earth: and when he
strengthened the foundations of the earth:
I was by him, suiting myself to him, I
was that wherein he took delight; and

The Holy Spirit is Feminine.

Here is supporting documentation---

ST. IRENAEUS CLEARLY STATES THAT WISDOM IS THE SPIRIT. WE HAVE JUST NOTED THE BIBLE REPORTS BOTH WISDOM AND THE SPIRIT WERE AT CREATION, FURTHER REINFORCING ST. IRENAEUS’S VIEW THAT WISDOM AND THE SPIRIT ARE THE SAME.
AS THE BIBLE CLEARLY STATES THAT WISDOM IS FEMININE, IT THEREFORE FOLLOWS THAT THE SPIRIT IS FEMININE.

JESUS INDICATES THE SPIRIT IS FEMININE: In response to a question from Nicodemus who asked “ But how is it possible for a man to be born when he is old? Can he enter his mother’s womb a second time and be born?” -NEB, John III: 4.
Jesus responds “ No one can enter the kingdom of God without being born from water and spirit. Flesh can give birth only to flesh; it is spirit that gives birth to spirit.” -NEB, John III: 5-6.

“the Spirit, in Hebrew, was feminine ( rouach ).--- The Syriac Fathers, in whose language ‘Spirit’ was feminine, went so far as to call it our Mother.”---The Seat of Wisdom - Louis Bouyer

Ben Zoma, a younger contemporary of the Apostles, states in the Talmud ( Hagiga 15a ) “ and the Spirit of God was brooding over the face of the waters like a dove which broods over her young but does not touch them.”

"---the Catholic theologian Matthias Scheeben performed the immortal service of interpreting the Holy Spirit as the feminine and maternal principle of the Trinity, and provided a theological basis for such a viewpoint. His work, however, has unfortunately not been taken up." writes Father Thomas Schipflinger on page 390 of his book SOPHIA-MARIA ( Samuel Weiser, Inc., 1998). The author is referring to Matthias Scheeben, DOGMATIK (Freiberg: Herder, 1952), vol. II, pp. 119-120.

The Holy Spirit is the Divine Mother of Jesus.

Here is supporting documentation----

Origen, famous early Biblical scholar, in his Commentary on the Gospel of John 2 wrote circa A.D. 230: “ But if someone accepts the Gospel according to the Hebrews, where the Savior says, “ My mother, the Holy Spirit, took me by one of my hairs and carried me off to the great mountain Thabor,” he will question how the “mother” of Christ can be “ the Holy Spirit” which was made through the Word.....it will not be strange at all for the Holy Spirit to be his “mother”, since every woman is called the “mother of Christ” because she does the will of the Father in heaven.”

ORIGEN DISCUSSES THE CONCEPT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT BEING THE MOTHER OF JESUS. It is interesting to note that the Gospel of Hebrews is not in the canon of the church. Why is this?
2 The Fathers of the Church, Origen, Commentary on the Gospel According to John, Books 1-10, translated by Ronald E. Heine, Comm. on John, Book 2, p. 116, (87), (88).

THE HOLY SPIRIT IS THE MOTHER OF JESUS BY THE PROCESS OF ELIMINATION. We note:
The Holy Spirit is either the Mother or the Father of Jesus when it says: “This is my Son, my Beloved, on whom my favour rests.” -NEB, Matthew III: 17.
JESUS ELIMINATES THE FATHER WHEN HE SAYS: “ your Advocate, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and will call to mind all that I have told you.” -NEB, John XIV: 26.
JESUS IS REFERRING TO THE HOLY SPIRIT AS A SEPARATE AND DISTINCT ENTITY DIFFERENT FROM THE FATHER. THEREFORE, AS JESUS’S PARENT, THE HOLY SPIRIT MUST ( BY ELIMINATION ) BE THE MOTHER.

JESUS INDICATES THE SPIRIT IS MOTHER: In response to a question from Nicodemus who asked “ But how is it possible for a man to be born when he is old? Can he enter his mother’s womb a second time and be born?” -NEB, John III: 4.
Jesus responds “ No one can enter the kingdom of God without being born from water and spirit. Flesh can give birth only to flesh; it is spirit that gives birth to spirit.” -NEB, John III: 5-6.

THE DIVINE MOTHER OF JESUS IS DESCRIBED IN REVELATION: “ Next appeared a great portent in heaven, a woman robed with the sun, beneath her feet the moon, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. She was pregnant.”-NEB, Rev. XII: 1-2
“ She gave birth to a male child, who was to rule all nations with an iron rod.” -NEB, Rev. XII: 5

NEW FINDINGS SUGGEST THE HOLY SPIRIT IS JESUS’S MOTHER- Powerful evidence has recently surfaced in support of the Holy Spirit being the Divine Mother of Christ.
The Coptic Gospels found by Egyptian peasants in 1945 near the town of Nag Hammandi may be viewed on the web.

They include the Gospel of Thomas, reportedly written by one of the 12 apostles, compiled circa AD 110, the Gospel of Philip written by Philip the Evangelist circa AD 70, and the Gospel of Truth composed AD 150 by Valentine, famous Saint of Alexandria.

According to the “Introduction” on the above mentioned website (concerning the Gospel of Thomas): “almost all biblical scholars who have been studying this document since its first publication have now concluded that Thomas must be accounted an authentic fifth Gospel, alongside the canonical quartet of John and the synoptics.”

The first page of the “Commentary” portion of the website covers “The Female Spirit”, and states:
“In a remarkable entry of the Philip Gospel, particular attention is drawn to the fact that ‘spirit’ is a feminine concept in the Semitic languages (Hebrew:---,ruakh):
‘Some say that Mary was impregnated by the Holy Spirit. They are confused, they know not what they say. Whenever was a female impregnated by a female?’(Ph 18)
”And indeed this fundamental point, traditionally obscured in scriptural translation and ignored by commentators, recurs thematically in both Thomas and Philip as well as the Gospel of Truth. It clearly has the most far-reaching theological implications.
“--- With the Holy Spirit as a female figure, however, the underlying idea is considerably elucidated: Father God and Mother Spirit and Incarnate Son as the basic mystery of three-in-one, the threefold Godhead. Here the concept is clearly that of a transcendental holy family, in which the divine Christ-Child- and indeed each child (Mt 18:10, Jn 11:52)- is eternally born of the mystical union between the paternal and maternal aspects of the selfsame Divinity.”

The author goes on to quote other passages in Thomas, Philip and Valentine which relate to this topic, after which we read:
“In numerous entries in the latter part of Philip, reference is then made to the holy ---bridal-chamber wherein the Son is born of the mystical union of the Father with the Spirit- thus for example:
‘He came forth in the bridal bed as one issuing from the bridegroom with the bride. This is how Yeshua established the essence of the totality.’ (Ph 89)
That primal mystery is then celebrated in the apostolic sacrament of the holy bridal-suite----.”
( according to the Gospel of Philip, “Yeshua is a secret name, Christ is a revealed name.” --Ph 20a)

SOME SCHOLARLY EVALUATIONS OF THIS MATERIAL:

“My mother [ bore ] me, yet [ my ] true [ Mother ] gave me life.” (Th 101)
Elaine Pagels in her book The Gnostic Gospels (1981) states: “ In the Gospel of Thomas, Jesus contrasts his earthly parents, Mary and Joseph, with his divine Father- the Father of Truth- and his divine Mother, the Holy Spirit.”

Some say that Mary was impregnated by the Holy Spirit. They are confused, they know not what they say. Whenever was a female impregnated by a female?’ (Ph 18) R. McL. Wilson, B.D., Ph.D. writes in his book The Gospel of Philip (1962) on page 81: “The passage rejects the doctrine that Mary conceived by the Holy Ghost, on the ground that the Spirit itself is female (a view held by the Ophites and the Valentinians, and due in part to the fact that the Hebrew ruah is feminine).” I observe that Wilson quickly moves on to other matters.
Martha Lee Turner in her book The Gospel According to Philip (1996) states on page 226: “This larger passage denies the virginal conception of Jesus and seems to flirt with portraying the Holy Spirit as kin to “the forces”, possibly as a lower Sophia. The apostolic opponents assert that Mary conceived by the Holy Spirit.” This having been said, she too is off to other subjects.

‘If it is appropriate to tell a mystery, the Father of the totality mated with the virgin who had come down- and a fire shown for him on that day. He revealed the great bridal-bed. Thus his body came into being on that day. He came forth in the bridal bed as one issuing from the bridegroom with the bride. This is how Yeshua established the essence of the totality.’ (Ph 89) R. McL. Wilson, B.D., Ph.D. in his book The Gospel of Philip (1962) struggles with this one. He states on page 147: “According to Irenaeus (i. 7. 1 ; Grant 176), the Savior is the bridegroom and Sophia-Achamoth the bride; since Jesus is the Saviour, he can hardly have originated from their union. There must therefore have been an earlier union, as suggested above. The simplest explanation ---seems to be that the body of Jesus emerges in a manner of one who has come from the bridegroom and the bride, i.e. in the form of a child.”
Again, the author fails to develop this startling revelation, but instead quickly changes the subject.
We note on page 146 that Wilson states: “---the gospel of Hebrews --- makes Jesus speak of the Spirit as his mother. It is thus possible that Mary was thought of as in some sense an incarnation of the Spirit---. The fact that Sophia-Acamoth is also called ‘the Holy Spirit’ adds to the perplexity of the modern reader, but can be quite readily explained in terms of Valentinian thought.” The author again fails to expand on the key point that the Holy Spirit has been identified as Jesus’s mother.

On page 236 of Karen L. King’s book Images of the Feminine in Gnosticism (1988), Kurt Rudolph makes some startling revelations concerning the passage in the Gospel of Philip cited above (Ph 89). I have included the passage numbers on the Coptic Gospel website, so that one can refer to the passages Rudolph is citing. The translation refered to by Rudolph differs slightly from the website translation. He states:
“The ‘great bridal chamber’ is (according to Ph 89) revealed by the Father of the All on the day when he was united with the virgin (i.e., Sophia) and his body came into being, that is, his manifestation in a shape took place; probably that refers to Christ ( cf. Ph 71, where the ‘Son of the Bridal Chamber’ came into being out of water, fire, and light).---- In all these cases ‘bridal chamber’ means a super-mundane world of light, the Plemora. It is named after the special place of the Jerusalem temple ‘the holy of holies’ (Ph 82 & Ph 136) which is hidden, beyond our imagination. It is the holiest place of the heavenly Jerusalem. In the same way the expression ‘bedchamber’ is used for the place beyond,---- the ‘secret of truth,’ the perfect glory, the Power that exalts powers, and so on” (Ph 136- Ph 143).

Rudolph’s explanation of the Gospel of Philip passages sheds light on the ultimate “Divine Mystery”, the holy of holies. This hidden place is called the bridal chamber or bridal bed, from which we learn that God and Sophia generated the Christ. Why something as momentous as this discovery (identification of holy of holies, and Sophia’s role in it as Christ’s Divine Mother) was not front page news in Karen King’s book totally mystifies me. My observation is that her book largely ignores this major finding.

MY OBSERVATION ON THE COPTIC FINDINGS:

I am delighted to have located this evidence in the Coptic Gospels in support of the Holy Spirit being the Divine Mother of Jesus.

I can understand why the Coptic Gospels were burned by part of the church 1600 years ago when they were worried about paganism, the Mother Goddess, and generally wanted to exclude women. But why over the past 50 years since the discovery of this previously unknown ancient material, is the church still obscuring and ignoring the Holy Spirit as Christ’s Divine Mother? Here is another “Divine Mystery”.

The Holy Spirit as Mother theme in the Coptic Gospels supports and clarifies such Biblical passages as in Revelation XII: 1-2, where the pregnant Divine Mother Sophia appears in heaven “robed with the sun, beneath her feet the moon, and on her head a crown of twelve stars”.Rev. XII: 5 goes on to say: “She gave birth to a male child”.
Similarly, the bride and bridegroom cited above in the Gospel of Philip add whole new meaning to the Old Testament book The Song of Songs, a powerful love story between bride and bridegroom. This we can now understand to be the love story between God and Sophia.

Why do you think the church , over 50 years after the Coptic Gospels were found, is so slow to point out these very significant findings reference Father God and the Mother Spirit?

Mary is the Incarnation of Divine Wisdom.

Here is supporting documentation----

"...insamuch as God, by one and the same decree, had established the origin of Mary and the Incarnation of Divine Wisdom."
Pope Pius IX- Bull Ineffabilis- 1854

"Both in her Offices and in the most holy Liturgy the Church hath been accustomed to apply to the creation of Mary the language in which the Holy Scriptures set forth the Eternal Generation of the Uncreated Wisdom, and that, because Mary was predestined in the same decree of the Incarnation of the same Wisdom."
Roman Breviary, December 10, Third Day within the Octave of the Immaculate Conception, Second Nocturn, Fourth lesson from the Dogmatic Bull of Pope Pius IX.

In his book SOPHIA-MARIA, A HOLISTIC VISION OF CREATION (published by Samuel Weiser, Inc.1998) author and Catholic priest Thomas Schipflinger states on pages 393-394 : "In addition to bringing together numerous contributions on the subject of Sophia, it has been the primary concern of this work to put forward the thesis that Sophia became a human being in Mary."
"When Sophia incarnates, Her personal essence remains the same, but the existential form changes. Her spiritual form gives way to an earthly form in the temporal and spatial world."
"Mary's body and human nature are ensouled by the elevated spiritual nature of Sophia. In this sense, Sophia is Mary's soul, and Mary is the Sedes Sapientia or the Seat of Wisdom. Sophia incarnated in Mary's body."
"The glory of Sophia-Mary's dignity and splendor only became apparent during the Assumption into heaven, when the human nature was transfigured or freed from the confines of the temporal and spatial world. Only then did She become manifest as the Queen of Heaven and Earth and the Lady of All Nations, the fulfillment of the yearning of all people for the perfected feminine and maternal nature, the charme eternel. Only then did She fully manifest all the dignities and beauties of the ideal woman which were prophetically perceived and promised in Israel's Books of Wisdom, and by many other peoples. Only then did She represent the celebration of the triumph of good over evil, of beauty over ugliness, of nobility over coarseness, of unity over division, of harmony over chaos, and of life over death. She humbly emptied Herself of Her grandeur in order to become a human being, making the victory and splendor of Sophia-Mary even more radiant. In the Revelation of John, this victory is proclaimed by the woman clothed with the sun (Rev. 12,1 ff) who is victorious over the dragon."
Schipflinger states on page 392 after discussion of Sophia and the Maternal Holy Spirit: "Today we stand at the end of a patriarchal age and at the dawn of a new age, and the recognition of the feminine and maternal identity of the Holy Spirit may represent a significant step forward. Understanding the Holy Spirit's femininity, and understanding Sophia-Mary as the Holy Spirit's most perfectly created Image, helps reveal the fundamental and essential role of the female in the Godhead, and restores the dignity of a women's role in religion. These teachings may well represent the theology of the future."

The Monastic Diurnal links Mary to Divine Wisdom. Although this ancient prayer book does not directly state Mary is the incarnation of Divine Wisdom, this connection is implied, because the two days that honor the Virgin Mary both use passages from Wisdom Biblical texts to describe Her. For example:
December 8- The Immaculate Conception or the Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary- "Chapter Prov. 8.22-24- The Lord possessed me from the beginning of his way, before his works of old. I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was. When there were no depths, I was brought forth."
As the very passage used to celebrate the Conception of the Virgin Mary is the one descibing the Lord setting up Divine Wisdom in the beginning, the reader is left with the implication that the conception of Mary and the conception of Wisdom are linked, or that Mary is the Incarnation of Divine Wisdom.
August 15- The Assumption or the Falling Asleep of The Blessed Virgin Mary- "At Lauds- Chapter Ecclus. 24:7,8- In all things I sought rest, and I shall abide in the Lord's inheritance. So the Creator of all gave me a commandment, and he that made me caused my tabernacle to rest.
At Sext- Chapter Ecclus. 24:10-12- So was I established in Sion: likewise in the beloved city he gave me rest, and in Jerusalem was my power; and I took root in an honorable people, even in the portion of the Lord's inheritance, and my abode in the assembly of the saints."
At None- Chapter Ecclus. 24:15- I gave a sweet smell like cinnamon and aspalathus, and I yielded a pleasant odour like the best myrrh."
These three passages in Ecclesiasticus 24 are from "The praise of Wisdom" section in which Divine Wisdom describes the making of the World with the Father, whereupon She settled in Jerusalem and grew like a tree spreading beautiful fragrance. Here again are passages on the activities of Divine Wisdom used to describe the Virgin Mary. These passages clearly serve to link Mary with Divine Wisdom.

MY OBSERVATIONS ON THESE FINDINGS:

I am delighted to learn that Pope Pius IX stated in his Bull Ineffabilis (1854) that Mary is the Incarnation of Divine Wisdom. Why has it taken so long for this very powerful piece of information promulgated in an Infallible Bull (cannot be disputed in the Catholic Church) to filter down to the rank and file? For example, the Anglican clergy (that I have spoken to) have little if any knowledge of this information. My Catholic friends seem to be indicating that is not what their church is currently teaching. Why would these findings not be passed along? More Divine Mystery!

Catholic priest Thomas Schipflinger's wonderful new book SOPHIA-MARIA is a "must read" on the subject. It has been aptly termed a veritable Sophia encyclopedia. His observations and thoughts on the Holy Spirit / Divine Wisdom / Mary have been a tremendous support to the positions I have taken on this web site.

The Monastic Diurnal is an ancient prayer book from the Breviarium Monasticum. The Monastic Office was set forth in 535 A.D.and "was the first complete and enduring order of daily praise and prayer in European Christendom." (quote from preface of Diurnal). We can conclude that the Divine Wisdom / Virgin Mary link went back to very early times in the liturgy of the church. Again, why hasn't this connection been explained and told to us? More Divine Mystery!

"Because, while bearing toward us a truly motherly affection and having in her care the work of our salvation, she is solicitous about the whole human race. And since she has been appointed by God to be the Queen of heaven and earth, and is exalted above all the choirs of angels and saints, and even stands at the right hand of her only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, she presents our petitions in a most effacacious manner. What she asks, she obtains. Her pleas can never be unheard." -Pope Pius IX- Bull Ineffabilis- 1854

AUTHOR'S EXPERIENCE WITH THIS SUBJECT-

In December of 1998, I became aware of a situation that touched my heart. Three months earlier, the daughter of an acquaintance had fallen from a building and still lay in a coma in a local hospital.

Realizing that the Divine Mother had been appearing in Medjugorje for several years, I hoped that in some way She might be able to help this child. Searching the web I was able to locate the Medjugorje web site. I composed an email outlining the situation and asked for help for this unfortunate young lady. Hitting the "send" button at 7PM on December 8, 1998 I had doubts that I would ever hear back; surely my message would be lost somewhere in cyberspace. Medjugorje is in Bosnia, and I was not sure they even spoke my language. (Totally unknown to me at the time was that December 8 is the date of the Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary according to The Monastic Diurnal, an ancient prayerbook. )

I was surprised and delighted to get an email back 12 hours later from Steve Shawl of the Medjugorje group. "I can do two things to help. First, I will send your letter as a petition to Medjugorje which will be presented to Our Lady during an apparition with Vicka. Second, I would like to send a very special rosary which was blessed by Our Lady during an apparition with Vicka in Medjugorje to the young lady in a coma." He asked that the rosary be placed near her in her hospital room.

When my Episcopal Priest and I visited the child one week after our petition on December 17, she lay in bed, her only movement one blinking eyelid. The rosary was yet to arrive. We said a prayer, gave her a Miraculous Medal, and departed. The outlook seemed bleak.

On Sunday December 27 my wife and I sat on a plane flying out West for a family holiday reunion. I had the middle seat, my wife on my right, a young businesswoman on my left. Full of questions about the whole healing subject, I was reading Father Francis MacNutt's book THE POWER TO HEAL while pondering our recent petition to Medjugorje. The young businesswoman opened her attache case and began flipping through the December 28 issue of BUSINESS WEEK magazine that had been in her case. Some of the pages began to spill over my book. I saw the BUSINESS WEEK page across from the one she was reading: a huge picture of the hilltop and cross where the Virgin Mary appears illustrated the article entitled "Letter from Bosnia-After the War, Miracles and Mutiny." The picture was captioned "Medugorje: Rome doesn't recognize the visitation that draws pilgrims." Rome may not recognize it, but I sat stunned. Here I'd sat thinking about our healing petition to Medjugorje, and to reinforce my thought, out pops that Medjugorje article from a business magazine not normally on the plane, flipped open at that very moment by a lady who by chance was sitting next to me!

On January 26, 1999 with my Episcopal Priest and equipped with the rosary now arrived from Medjugorje, I paid a second visit to the hospital. This time the young lady sat up in a wheelchair. As we approached, she tried to get up, moving her legs and one arm around energetically. Eyes open, she appeared to have made significant progress during the five weeks since my last visit. Her father reported, "she is coming slowly along, a testimonial to Faith as well as to medicine. We have active movement in both legs and one arm now- nothing coordinated or purposeful, but an improvement- and she seems to be slightly more aware mentally. A long way to go yet, but with enough little steps like we've had, there's no reason to be anything but hopeful."

On January 27, her father stated, "I came by last night to see my daughter and saw the Rosary! It looks wonderful and I'm full of Faith that this is one more avenue of strength for my girl. She IS showing improvement recently, which helps us keep our courage up, but the doctors are pretty direct in saying that we are still too early on in the game to be making bets---so we hang on and keep praying!"

In May 99 I suggested to the father that we try a second petition. He said he thought it was worth a try, and that "the doctors have told us that we should be thinking in a timeframe significantly longer than we had been hoping for, so we are a little down but no less hopeful." On the evening of May 5, 1999, I emailed Steve Shawl of the Medjugorje group again, saying that the girl had improved, moved a little, but could not yet speak. Could we make another petition? Less than twelve hours later, Steve replied: "Consider it done!"

Eleven weeks after the second petition, on July 19, 1999 the father emailed me encouraging news: "There have been marked improvements lately---In the last four/five weeks she had become completely aware of where she is, what has happened, and what her situation is. Her intense determination is being focused on her therapy, where she is now able to kneel upright with only light support for a minute at a time, and ocupational therapy where she is regaining gross-motor control of her left arm and some very limited dexterity with her fingers. Her right arm is just showing signs of re-awakening gross motor movement, but it is far behind her left arm. Speech is still far away, as her tongue is still moving in a very crude fashion, but she is beginning to mouth simple words...Some people find it fashionable to sneer at prayer, we believe and have seen and felt its benefits."

At 1:41 PM July 19, I emailed Steve Shawl of the Medjugorge group with the request: "Do you think a third petition would be possible? We are praying that the child may be able to speak again. Please let us know if a third petition can be made, and again many thanks---."
Exactly 7 minutes later, at 1:48 PM July 19 an email response from Steve Shawl stated: "I will send the third petition today!"

On September 8, seven weeks after the third petition, her father again emailed me: "My daughter has, for the last seven to ten weeks, shown significant improvement after what had been a long period of discouragingly slow progress. That her acceleration started shortly after you so kindly sent her petition forward only increases our faith in the power of prayer and the power of Our Lord. It is not possible to think that her recovery is anything but a Gift from a very forgiving God.
Our daughter is now clearly awake, hears and understands all communication, and remembers everything up to the time of her accident. Her short-term memory is quite badly affected, and she may not remember a morning's event into the afternoon or evening. For her birthday, July 30th, she began to speak (although very faintly) and can be clearly understood, although there is no tone or inflection in her speech. This is a triumph, if not an actual miracle."

I visited the family when the daughter had come home for a day in January 2000. It had been just over a year since I had first seen her in a coma in a hospital bed. She had recently made a Christmas home visit also. Speech much improved, she clearly spoke, a few words at a time. She was working on her balance, standing and walking with help.

Steve Shawl sums it all up very well when he said to me in one of his emails: "Thank you for the update. It is very humbling to see and hear the incredible power of God at work!"

AUTHOR'S COMMENTS: The timing of the improvements (following the three petitions) along with the father's comments, confirm my belief as well: we witness Steve Shawl's words "the incredible power of God at work!"
Steve Shawl may be contacted through the Medjugorje web site, see URL link at the end of this web site.

Evan’s Mission Statement---

My mission is to present in a convincing manner the case that the Holy Spirit is the Divine Feminine and the Divine Mother.
This information appears to be known today by various scholars at the University level, and certainly by scholars in the early church.
It is my observation that this finding has not been disseminated to parishioners at the church level. For some reason, the Holy Spirit as Divine Feminine has been suppressed, and in some cases in the past, has been suppressed very aggressively.
It is my mission to present this case so that women specifically (and humanity in general) can have back their rightful representative in the Godhead.
